Drake Opportunities for Gaining Skills in Healthcare


Date: Thursday-Saturday, July 9-11, 2026

Location: Drake University


Program Overview:

BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare is a program that will introduce you to careers in the health care professions by educating you about opportunities in health sciences and inspiring you to explore different pathways. You will participate in hands-on laboratory experiences, educational sessions, and interactive discussions with students and faculty in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to understand how to best prepare for a career in health care. Special emphasis is placed on promoting careers in athletic training, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and many others. The overarching goal of this program is to expose you to a wide variety of opportunities within health care and educate you about how you can best prepare for a career in the health professions.


Program Goals:

  • You will learn about careers in the health care professions.
  • You will learn about promoting cultural competence and diversity in health care and among health professionals.
  • You will learn about the importance of practical lab experiences and begin to develop laboratory skills.
  • You will investigate the role of health care professionals to gain a better understanding of patient-provider relationships through skill-building exercises.
  • You will be able to plan your remaining high school curriculum and extracurricular activities to prepare for a career in health care.


Detailed Description:

This summer we will host an event that includes staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall for two nights. This event will take place on Thursday, July 9 - Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Drake University and will include a number of activities that will help you learn about preparing for a career in the health professions. Our sessions will include:

  • Career options in healthcare
  • Individual breakout sessions focused on Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, and Health Sciences
  • Lab activities in various areas of health professions
  • Interaction with current students and faculty
  • Off-campus field trip to local health organization
  • College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences programs at Drake
  • Preparing for college admission
  • Entertainment on campus
  • Staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall for 2 nights
  • Meals on campus


Participant Qualifications:

You must meet the following requirements in order to participate:

  • Enrolled as a 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader during the 2026/2027 academic year, or you must have graduated from high school in 2025 or 2026
  • Have an interest in careers in health care, math, and/or science fields.


Program Cost:

Registration for this event will close on Monday, June 8, 2026 at 12:00 pm (noon) CDT. Due to the costs involved in providing an overnight experience on campus, there is a $200.00 fee for participating in BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare. All students that meet the eligibility criteria above are welcome to register. Financial assistance may be available to students who qualify. Payments will be accepted for this program until Monday, June 8, 2026 at 11:59 pm CDT. Participants who have not paid the registration fee by this date will forfeit their spot in the program. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations made after June 8, 2026.
