Theater Club in April

The Theater Club is for those who regularly read 'en français' and for those who are reading a play in French for the first time.

Come join us for the Theater Club at the French Library, a place to read, watch, discuss and recite contemporary and classic French plays with fellow enthusiasts! At the Theater Club, we'll discuss a different play each month and read excerpts aloud to each other.

This club strives to foster discussion and dialogue around a love of contemporary theater and a chosen play: attendees are wholeheartedly encouraged to come and practice speaking in French. No acting skill required, and no public performances are planned!

Our April meeting features the 2025 Molière-winning play Du Charbon dans les veines by Jean-Philippe Daguerre.

"1958, Nœux-les-Mines, petite ville minière du Nord de la France. Pierre et Vlad sont amis depuis l’enfance. Ils partagent leur temps à creuser à la mine, à élever des pigeons voyageurs et à jouer de l’accordéon dans l’orchestre local dirigé par Sosthène, « boute-en-train et philosophe de comptoir », personnage central de cette petite sphère joviale et haute en couleurs malgré la poussière du charbon. À partir du jour où Leila, jeune et jolie Marocaine, vient jouer de l’accordéon dans l’orchestre, le monde des deux meilleurs amis ne sera plus jamais le même…

Jean-Philippe Daguerre est l’auteur de pièces à succès dont Adieu Monsieur Haffmann récompensée par 4 Molière en 2018, et La Famille Ortiz, Étoile d’or du Parisien de la meilleure pièce 2019. Sa dernière pièce, Le Petit Coiffeur, qui a été nommée aux Molière 2022, est en cours d’adaptation au cinéma."

Club participants are asked to read the play beforehand and bring their copy to the meeting for discussion and recitation. The text can be purchased on L'avant-scène théâtre, librairie théâtrale, or Amazon.
