IAIA Inauguration for Dr. Shelly C. Lowe—Symposium

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) is the only college in the world dedicated to the study of contemporary Native American and Alaska Native arts. IAIA offers undergraduate degrees in Cinematic Arts and Technology, Creative Writing, Indigenous Liberal Studies, Museum Studies, Performing Arts, and Studio Arts; graduate degrees in Creative Writing, Studio Arts, and Cultural Administration; and certificates in Broadcast Journalism, Business and Entrepreneurship, Museum Studies, and Native American Art History. The college serves approximately 500 full-time equivalent (FTE) Native and non-Native American students from around the globe, representing nearly a hundred federally recognized tribes. Named one of the top art institutions by UNESCO and the International Association of Art, IAIA is among the leading art institutes in our nation and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

Across two days on the IAIA campus, we will honor Dr. Lowe, celebrate scholarship, and share a collective vision for the future of IAIA.

<p>This historic and momentous occasion reflects what has always shaped IAIA since its founding in 1962—Community, collaboration, and the belief that Indigenous arts and cultures are essential to our past, present, and future. The Inauguration events are designed to serve the campus Community, welcome all of Santa Fe, and invite supporters and friends nationwide to participate both in person and through livestreamed programming. As IAIA moves forward with 64 years of shared values and creative excellence, we look to the future with purpose, continuing to inspire generations of Indigenous artists, Culture-Bearers, and leaders.</p><p>Dr. Shelly C. Lowe (Navajo), raised in Ganado, Arizona, brings a vision grounded in student success, Indigenous creative excellence, and community partnership, informed by national service as Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities and leadership roles at Harvard University and Yale University.</p>
