PHOENIX FLIES 2025 | Callanwolde Mansion History Tour

Overview

Discover the unique architectural features of the 100-year-old mansion as well as its fascinating history.

Tour the Callanwolde Mansion and learn about Callanwolde, one of Atlanta’s architectural treasures, the former estate of Charles Howard Candler (1878-1957), second president of The Coca-Cola Company and eldest son of company founder Asa G. Candler, Sr. Following Mr. Candler’s death, Callanwolde’s ownership changed several times. By 1971, it was in danger of sale and demolition. Druid Hills neighbors then joined with DeKalb County officials to purchase the property and subsequently opened Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in 1972. The County still owns and maintains the property. The Callanwolde Foundation has operated the Arts Center since 1983, serving generations of artists and arts students while substantially enriching the quality of life for metro Atlantans. This tour will cover the history, aspects of the architectural design, and quirky cultural facts which makes Callanwolde a must visit for anyone interested in Atlanta's history.
