Jackson Creek Fish Survey with USC Ichthyology

Jackson Creek Fish Survey with USC Ichthyology

Sesquicentennial State ParkColumbia, SC
Friday, Apr 24 from 2 pm to 4 pm
Overview

Join students and researchers from USC to sample fish biodiversity in Jackson Creek, just downstream of Sesquicentennial Lake!

Take a glimpse under the water and see what aquatic species call Jackson Creek their home! This event will be running alongside a USC ichthyology course, led by Dr. Joe Quattro. Participants will get a chance to see some of the ways fisheries biologists sample these underwater habitats, as well as get an up close look at some of our local fish species.

About Electro-Fishing

During this demonstration, participants may observe electro-fishing, a standard, non-lethal fish sampling method used by trained fisheries biologists and researchers. Electro-fishing uses controlled electrical currents in the water to temporarily stun fish, allowing scientists to safely collect data, identify species, and then promptly return fish to the stream.

While this method is widely used for research and conservation, it can be stressful for fish, and it is strictly regulated. All electro-fishing conducted during this event will be performed by permitted professionals as part of a University of South Carolina ichthyology course, in compliance with South Carolina state regulations. No participant handling or independent electro-fishing will be permitted.

This event is intended as an educational demonstration. Attendees should be aware that they may see fish briefly stunned during sampling before being released back into the creek.
