Navigating Public Opposition

Navigating Public Opposition

Online event
Tuesday, Mar 31 from 12 pm to 1 pm MST
Overview

Thank you for your interest in this event. Unfortunately, we need to reschedule. We'll provide a program update and a new date soon.

We’re all aware that public engagement is a requirement, but it’s not without its challenges. When communities feel unheard or the decision and development process is muddy, engagement can quickly turn into public opposition. In this Lunch and Learn, we’ll explore the fine line between constructive dialogue and public backlash, discuss what can fuel public opposition, and share strategies for fostering trust and transparency. Join us to learn how proactive communication and inclusive processes can transform potential conflict into collaboration.

About the speaker

Melanie Lawson is the Public Outreach Director at the Pima Association of Governments (PAG). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in Communication from the University of Southern California.

Before joining PAG in early 2024, Melanie spent nearly 15 years working in the mining industry across the western United States, where she focused on community engagement, local employment, and procurement programs to support economic development and build strong relationships with local communities.

Outside of work, Melanie enjoys being a mom to two energetic children, road and mountain biking, and playing soccer.
