Nonprofit capacity building is about tapping into the resources and tools that help your organization function optimally.

Madeline Mercer is a nonprofit consultant with a strong background in public health, helping small and mid-sized nonprofits become competitive, sustainable grant applicants. She is the founder of a nonprofit consulting practice that supports organizations across Georgia working in human services, disability and inclusion, arts and culture, education, workforce development, and community health. Her clients range from grassroots organizations to large-scale nonprofits with multi-million-dollar budgets.Madeline works with organizational leadership to strengthen fundraising plans, build competitivegrant strategies, and align programs with long-term financial sustainability. She has personally represented many organizations in funder relationships - helping secure grants ranging from $5,000 to over $1 million from foundations, corporations, and public funding sources. Many nonprofits are making the most of every dollar, and an investment in a full-time grant writing or development staff member is not a viable option. Madeline provides affordable, customized solutions that have helped small and mid-sized nonprofits move from emergency fundraising to strategic grant readiness, positioning them to compete successfully for larger and more sustainable funding opportunities. In addition, her background in public health and program evaluation allows her to help organizations translate impact into compelling data-driven funding narratives, providing a full-scope perspective of the grant pipeline.Training Topics1. Building a Grant Readiness Toolkit: Participants will learn what documentation everynonprofit should have prepared before applying for grants, including financialstatements, program budgets, impact data, organizational materials, and governancedocuments that funders commonly request.2. How to Research the Right Funders: Attendees will learn how to identify foundations andcorporate funders whose priorities align with their mission, and how to determinewhether an opportunity is worth pursuing before investing time in an application.3. Creating an Internal Grant Tracking System: The session will cover how to organize andmanage grant opportunities using an internal database to track deadlines, applicationstatus, reporting requirements, and relationship notes with funders.4. Cultivating Relationships with Foundations: Participants will learn strategies for buildingauthentic relationships with program officers and foundation staff, including how toapproach initial outreach, steward funders after an award, and position their organizationfor long-term partnerships.5. Strengthening Program Strategy and Evaluation: Attendees will explore how strongprogram design and clear evaluation measures make an organization more competitivefor funding. The training will cover how to communicate outcomes, measure impact, anddemonstrate effectiveness to funders.
