ActiveSGV Rain Gardens Volunteer Day in Alhambra
The ActiveSGV Rain Gardens Team invites you to volunteer with us!
Together we’ll be transforming a community member's garden into a water-saving, habitat-rich ecosystem — and you’ll learn practical skills you can use at home.
What you’ll learn: Our team will walk you through the sheet mulching process — an eco-friendly technique that removes lawns while improving soil health. You’ll see how it works and learn tips for handling different types of grass. You’ll also see how we shape the ground to create swales and capture precious rain, allowing the garden to thrive with minimal watering.
Activities include:
- Creating swales to collect rainwater
- Laying cardboard to smother grass
- Spreading wood chip mulch to improve the soil
- Removing invasive plants to let native plants flourish
This is a great opportunity to connect with your neighbors, learn something new, and be part of a growing movement for greener, more resilient communities. Come make a difference — one garden at a time!
Help Our Gardens Grow: We need plain brown cardboard (no plastic coating/tape, please) for our rain garden sites. If you have extra, feel free to bring it to the event! All cardboard sizes will work, but the larger the better. The cardboard will help us suppress weeds and build healthy soil naturally.
