What is Left on Read: The Club™?

Left on Read: The Club™ is the official book club of Left on Read, Wichita’s independent Black-owned bookstore. We gather monthly for facilitated discussion, community, and connection centering curated reads by Black and other under-amplified authors .

Is this an in-person or virtual book club?

Monthly sessions are held in person. If you can’t make it in person, you’re welcome to join the conversation via the Fable app (bit.ly/lortheclub).

Where do we meet?

Meet us at The Club...it's going down! We meet at Left on Read (612 E Douglas Ave., Suite 200). Venue changes will be announced via email and social media.

Is your space accessible?

The bookstore is located on the main level of The Renfro (across from Naftzger Park, on Gallery Alley), with level entry access. If you need additional support, email us in advance so we can assist you.

Where should I park?

Street parking is available along Douglas and St. Francis. There is a parking lot behind the building off of 1st street, where you can park (at your own risk) in unmarked spaces with no signage. There are also several nearby lots and garages. Visit downtownwichita.org for more info.

What time should I arrive?

Doors open at 6:15 PM. We kindly ask that you do not arrive earlier than this to allow time for staff to reset the space after closing.

Seating is first come, first served. The space is small and intimate, so early arrival is encouraged.

What happens if I arrive late?

Late arrivals are welcome, but we ask that you enter quietly and be mindful of the ongoing discussion.

How much does it cost to attend?

Registration for each monthly session is $10 and is required to participate. Books are purchased separately. Registered attendees receive 15% off the book club selection when purchased from Left on Read. Left on Read Members receive 25% off the book club selection.

Do I need to purchase the book from Left on Read to participate?

No. You’re welcome to source the book wherever you choose. Purchasing from Left on Read is encouraged and comes with a book club discount, but it is not required.

Do I need to finish the book before attending?

No. While encouraged, finishing the book is not required, and a time will still be had!

What if I’m new to book clubs?

No prior book club experience is needed. All readers are welcome.

While nothing is required, you’re encouraged to bring your copy of the book, something to write or annotate with, light snacks if needed, and of course, yourself.

Registrations are non-refundable. This helps us plan for space, materials, and facilitation and ensures we can provide the best experience for attendees.

You’re welcome to attend individual sessions. Registration is per meeting.

In-person discussions will likely include spoilers. If that’s a concern, we recommend reading as much as you’re comfortable with beforehand. If participating via Fable (bit.ly/lortheclub), you can join chapter-specific discussion rooms to see content relevant to your current progress.

Light refreshments may be provided. You are also more than welcome to BYOS! While light snacks are welcome, please be mindful of the shared space and ensure all drinks are securely covered.

Photos and video may be captured during the event for promotional, educational, or archival purposes by Left on Read, The Millennial Black Professor®, and TMBP Media. By registering for and attending this event, you consent to the use of your image, likeness, and/or voice for these purposes.

The store will remain open for a half hour ('til 8:30 PM) after the show for browsing and purchases.

Yes. Fable book club participation (bit.ly/lortheclub) is open to anyone who wants to read along and participate asynchronously. In-person sessions require registration.

While all are welcome, events at Left on Read center the experiences of Black and Brown individuals. This is a thoughtful, intentional space that makes room for connection, reflection, and enjoyment. Participants are expected to engage in alignment with the purpose and intention of the space.

Left on Read reserves the right to remove any participant, without refund, whose behavior disrupts the experience or is inconsistent with the expectations of the space.
