Learn to play American Mahjong at Kimpton Marlowe Hotel in Cambridge! Introducing a three week beginner series at The Bambara Kitchen and Bar. Mahjong instructors Emily and Bev of The Canasta and Mahjong Connection will help you learn and improve your game and connect with other players each week!

Sip on a mahjong-themed cocktail or order from the mahjong inspired food menu, as part of Kimpton Marlowe Hotel's Mahjong and Mingle series (food and drink purchased separately).

The three week beginner series is perfect for brand-new players or anyone looking for a back to basics refresher. No prior experience is required—just bring your curiosity and get ready for a fun, social game! Or, join us for select classes as your schedule allows.

Come solo and meet other players or bring your group! A full mahjong set-up will be provided during class, including all mahjong sets, instructional handouts, laminated cheat sheets, and NMJL cards available to borrow during class. Parking is complimentary for class participants.

Beginner Mahjong Series

March 2nd, 9th and 16th

Mahjong 101 (3/2)

• History of mahjong, learn the tiles and deal, understand how to read the NMJL card, learn the Charleston, experience a general flow of game play

Mahjong 102 (3/9)

• Take a deeper dive into the Charleston strategy, solidify rules of game play, and play ~2 games with instructor support.

Mahjong 103 (3/16)

• Review important rules of the game, discuss strategies for pivoting, determining which line to go for, etc., play ~2-3 games with instructor support, be prepared to play with anyone at the conclusion of the class!

The Canasta and Mahjong Connection

We are Beverly and Emily, a mother-daughter duo and experienced Canasta and American Mah Jongg instructors. We’ve taught hundreds of students and are passionate about making these games accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Beverly is a retired teacher, principal, and special education administrator. Emily is a high school special education teacher.

Refunds

Refunds are allowed up until 7 days prior to the first class. Unfortunately we are not able to refund the cost of the eventbrite fee. If you are unable to attend within 7 days of the first class, you may have a friend take your place, or reach out to us.
