Jarvis R. Givens is a professor of Education and African & African American Studies at Harvard University

Gorman Museum of Native American Art

Professor Givens specializes in 19th- and 20th-century African American history and theories of race, power, and schooling. He will discuss his recent scholarship in American Grammar: Race, Education, and the Building of a Nation (2025) and I'll Make Me a World: The 100-Year Journey of Black History Month (2026) with Lawrence T. Winn from the UC Davis School of Education. Reception and Gorman Museum of Native American History visit to follow the talk.
