Join Patrick Felker and the Ocean State Bird Club for a moderate-to-difficult birding hike to a truly unique destination—the tri-state point where Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts meet. This roughly 7-mile loop features about 600 feet of elevation gain and offers a rewarding mix of woodland birding and regional exploration.Our route begins on the Benson Mountain Trail, continues along Starr Road to the Border Trail, and leads to the tri-state marker itself. From there, we’ll follow a connecting trail into Douglas State Forest before heading south on the Midstate Trail and reentering Rhode Island via the North/South Trail. After several miles on the N/S Trail, we’ll reconnect with the Benson Mountain Trail to complete the loop.This hike is a great opportunity to explore the rugged northwest corner of Rhode Island and visit a distinctive geographic landmark.Bird-wise, expect a variety of common winter woodland species, including Dark-eyed Juncos, sparrows, kinglets, chickadees, titmice, and several species of woodpeckers. If nearby ponds remain unfrozen, there may also be opportunities to spot waterfowl.We will meet at the main dirt parking lot off Wood Road, a dirt road just off Buck Hill Road (coordinates: 41.98520738628019, -71.78921717576182). When driving, note that if you enter Connecticut, you’ve gone too far. Bathrooms are not available. Bring binoculars if you have them, scopes will not be necessary and are not recommended due to the mileage of the walk.
