Housing + Black Neighborhoods
Learn how segregation, broken promises, and wealth extraction affected quality of life for black neighborhoods throughout history.
Beryl Satter, professor emerita of history at Rutgers University, will preview her forthcoming book Cash on the Block: The Broken Promise of Reinvestment in Black Urban Neighborhoods (May 2026). Satter traces the history of government and corporate involvement in the creation of the segregated Black urban neighborhood, as well as how private interests exploited efforts to improve conditions by diverting funding from poor urban neighborhoods. Introduced by Daniel Moak.
This event will be held at Connecticut College in Oliva Hall, located in the Cummings Art Center.
This event is part of "Housing Plus: How Better Housing Connects to Everything," a year-long series of public conversations brings together prominent scholars, practitioners, advocates, and community members to discuss the role of better housing in strengthening community life in all its aspects. "Housing Plus" is part of "We Live Here New London," an exhibit examining the history and present-day realities of the housing crisis in America, presented by Connecticut College and the Center for Housing Opportunity Eastern Connecticut.
