Continuing our ongoing investment in the sonic resonance of Black space, we're pleased to host Listening Hours at The Land School.
Grounded in the ethos of the Japanese ongaku kissa, Listening Hours welcomes our communities to gather for regular deep listening sessions that activate records from across Rebuild's sound-based archives, including new releases from our creative partners, legacy records from our collections, and sonic gifts from friends, archivists, DJs and musicians.
This experimental endeavor is an extension of Rebuild’s decades-long project honoring the aural arts and the contributions of emerging and prolific sound-based practitioners.
Listening Hours at The Land School offers an alternative model for the creation and operation of communal spaces, one driven by a belief in sonic hospitality as a sacred practice rather than a commercial tool.
We believe deeply that listening is study. Every week, Wednesdays through Saturdays from 12 PM to 8 PM, and on Sundays from 2 PM to 6 PM, we invite you to embody space, sound, and silence as our team, alongside some of Chicago's most notable record selectors and special guests, offers us opportunities to be present with their selections, the spirit of these recorded moments, and each other. Through the practice of presence and aural attention, our auditorium will become a site of gathering and grounding for all in need of this particular space.
As welcomed guests to this program, we humbly ask that you:
- Enter with intention. Be present fully.
- Honor the sound as sacred breath.
- Practice right volume.
- Let the whole side play.
- Care for this place as home.
- Respect the elders—on vinyl and in flesh.
- Let the space speak.
- Mind your posture.
- Accept impermanence.
- Leave changed.
We look forward to communing with you as we honor listening as a form of inquiry and becoming.
Please note: Listeners are welcome to stay in the space beyond booked reservation time, capacity dependent.
