This hour-long masterpiece, a major 20th-century piano work, explores revolutionary themes through intricate variations, incorporating extended techniques, political allusions, and contrasting styles, often seen as a modern counterpart to Bach's Goldbergs or Beethoven's Diabelli Variations.
