Fifth Friday Deaf Food Hall

Since I host for the Facebook group Deaf Events for Californians, others on the hosting committee have made it clear to me that I am only to invite those who are fluent or near-fluent in ASL. We are trying to enjoy our conversations withOUT being asked to slow our signing. We also don’t wanna be asked to spell out what a sign means out of every sentence or especially more than once per sentence.There’s a difference between ASL events and Deaf events. ASL events invite signers of all skill levels and are attended by those who have patience with not being understood when signing fluently. Deaf events, on the other hand (no pun intended), invite those who understand fluent signing and are more likely to be part of Deaf culture or at least be fully accepted in the Deaf community. So, my events are DEAF events, NOT ASL events.

Friendly reminders:1) ALL attendees MUST have the ability to have full conversations in ASL. This is NOT a practice event.2) Conversations about Deaf experiences not shared by the hearing majority may occur. Please be mindful and respectful of whether or not you belong in such conversations.
