<p>Join us for The Black Advocacy Symposium, a remote public program accompanying The African American Folklorist Black Advocacy Issue. This gathering speaks directly to Black Americans—because our communities have been forced to become experts in surviving institutional harm, protecting memory, and pursuing justice—while also welcoming everyone committed to showing up responsibly. Featuring Allisa Charles-Findley, sister of Botham Jean (killed in Dallas on September 6, 2018), the symposium offers a practical, people-first roadmap for what to do after tragedy: how to respond, who to contact, what steps to take, and how to sustain advocacy over time. Hosted by the Jack Dappa Blues Heritage Preservation Foundation, we also spotlight how folklorists and ethnomusicologists can use our methods—ethical documentation, oral history, and community archiving—to support advocates, strengthen narrative control, and help families carry legacy beyond the headlines.</p>
