Overview

Craft Genki Balls with us & help clean the Ala Wai Canal! A hands-on eco-experience every 2nd Saturday at Wayfinder Waikiki!

Genki Ball Making Experience at Wayfinder Waikiki

Join us for a hands-on community experience that brings purpose and connection to your stay in Waikiki. In collaboration with the Genki Ala Wai Project, Wayfinder Waikiki invites our guests to participate in the restoration of one of Hawai‘i’s most impacted waterways—the Ala Wai Canal.

Held every second Saturday of the month, this interactive workshop gives guests the opportunity to craft Genki Balls—small bundles of soil, EM® (Effective Microorganisms), and other natural ingredients that help digest harmful bacteria and sludge in polluted water. These eco-friendly “probiotics for the environment” are a simple yet powerful tool in the movement to clean and revitalize our local ecosystem.

Once 100 Genki Balls are assembled, guests and team members will release them together into the Ala Wai Canal, contributing directly to the vision of making the canal swimmable and fishable by 2026.

Why It Matters

The Ala Wai Canal, built in 1928 for land development and flood control, has suffered decades of pollution due to urban runoff, debris, and organic sludge. Today, it stands as one of Hawai‘i’s most polluted waterways. But with your help, that can change.

Bioremediation through Genki Balls is a natural, non-invasive method that restores balance to aquatic ecosystems. Each ball supports the breakdown of toxic buildup, improving water quality and paving the way for native species to return.

Be Part of the Solution

This meaningful experience allows guests to give back to the land and deepen their connection to the culture and community of Hawai‘i. Whether you're traveling solo, with friends, or as a family, we invite you to roll up your sleeves and join us in creating a cleaner, healthier Waikīkī.

Together, one ball at a time, we can make waves of change.
