Walking with Survivors 2026

Walking with Survivors 2026

Morgantown Farmers MarketMorgantown, WV
Saturday, Apr 18 from 1 pm to 3 pm
Overview

Join us as we walk a mile through downtown Morgantown to show our support for Survivors of sexual violence during SA Awareness Month!

April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and, as such, RDVIC hosts an annual "Walking With Survivors" event to raise awareness of this issue and to come together as a community to show our support for survivors. As April is also recognized as Child Abuse Prevention Month, we will also be raising awareness for this equally important cause.

We have previously participated in the national campaign "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes," where our male participants walked through downtown Morgantown in high-heeled shoes to get a small taste of what it's like to walk a mile in someone else's shoes. Although women are disproportionately affected by sexual violence, we recognize that sexual violence knows no boundaries: It is not restricted by gender, sexual orientation, race, age, or economic status. We have changed our title in order to be very clear that all survivors deserve the support of their community.

Although this is a serious topic, we want to keep the event lighthearted, family and pet friendly , and fun. Check-in and day-of registration will open at 12:00 PM, the event will begin at 1:00 PM, then we will return to the pavilion for a small celebration with music, food, and prizes, including a prize for the biggest team. Also, in honor of the event's origins, we will have a shoe table for anyone who would like the experience of walking a mile in someone else's shoes!
