The Contraband Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) Publicly Supported Organization -"We gather to commemorate those whom liberation was won, not just for us, but by us. Our story is not about the institution of bondage, but of our ancestor’s resilience, fortitude, and vision for a better future."

What can I expect during the symposium?

Over two days the Symposium features panel discussions with leading historians, scholars, and authors, descendants sharing family histories, stories of men who became soldiers in the USCT, interpretation and storytelling, a tour of Elmerton Cemetery & the launch of the Contraband Digital Archive.

Why does this Symposium matter?

For generations, the story of emancipation has often been told through government policy and military action. New research is shifting that narrative. This Symposium highlights the actions of the men, women, and children who initiated their own freedom by fleeing slavery and reaching Union lines.

Why is Contraband the preferred term?

Accepted Answer

As descendants continue the work of reclaiming the word Contraband, intentionally spelled with a capital C, this gathering restores historical agency and authorship to the people whose courage transformed American history.

All are welcome. This Symposium is designed for Descendants of the American Contrabands, Historians & Civil War scholars, Public historians & Museum Professionals, Archivists & Genealogists, Educators, Students of African American history, & Community members interested in local history.

Where is Parking located?

Accepted Answer

Parking lots are located behind the Visitor Center at 30 Ingalls Road, Across from the Chamberlin Hotel, at the Casemate Museum and at the Chapel of the Centurion as indicated on the map above. Street parking is also available along Ingalls Road, Fenwick Road, and Bernard Road.
