Premodern Korea Lecture with Isabelle Sancho

Founded in the year 2016, the GW Institute for Korean Studies (GWIKS) is a university wide Institute housed in the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University. The establishment of the GWIKS in 2016 was made possible by a generous grant from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). The mission of GWIKS is to consolidate, strengthen, and grow the existing Korean studies program at GW, and more generally in the greater D.C. area and beyond. The Institute enables and enhances productive research and education relationships within GW, and among the many experts throughout the region and the world.

<p>This talk is an overview of the book, which was published in 2025 by Atelier des Cahiers, a publisher specializing in Korea that is distributed in France and Korea. Isabelle Sancho will present a discussion on the origins of this ambitious project, which is the first of its kind in Western languages. The project introduces the complex issue of Confucianism and Korea to all audiences, both academic and general. The speaker will elucidate the choices that were made in determining the detour with China, the long periodization of almost a millennium in Korean history, the thirty themes, the numerous indexes and the writing style, which falls between a general introduction and critical essay. Consequently, she will address the potential for an English adaptation of the book.&nbsp;</p>
