Learn ACT strategies to help parents reconnect with their values and respond to parenting challenges with greater psychological flexibility.

Description:In 2024, the Surgeon General of the United States issued an advisory underscoring the urgent need to support the mental health and well-being of parents and caregivers. ACT therapists are in a prime position to help parents learn skills to increase their focus on parenting values and bring a mindful, accepting approach to interactions with their children. In this interactive workshop, attendees will learn how to apply ACT techniques in their work with clients who feel overwhelmed or stressed by the demands of parenting. The presenters will demonstrate evidence-based methods for assessing the workability of their client’s parenting behaviors, exploring relevant contextual factors including cultural dynamics, and helping parents stay in the present moment with self-compassion. Through these processes, clients will learn to identify parenting values and remain connected with them during difficult interactions with their children. Whether your clients have young children or older adolescents, relevant resources for specific ACT techniques and setting measurable, values-based goals to support parenting practices will be shared. The workshop will include didactic presentation, group discussion, and small group practice.Target Audience: This workshop is for intermediate to advanced ACT practitioners. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Weaver and Associates maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits.</li><li>CEs are awarded contingent on timely post-event paperwork submission by event organizers.</li><li>You must attend the course in its entirety in order to receive continuing education credits. Instructor Bios: Dr. Staci Martin is a clinical psychologist and Peer Reviewed ACT Trainer specializing in ACT for children through adults with health conditions. She is a private ACT consultant and supervisor. She currently chairs the Plenary subcommittee for the ACBS Conference Strategy Committee and serves as associate editor of the Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science. She has been interviewed on several podcasts about her work doing ACT with medical populations. Dr. Martin is also a Senior Associate Scientist at the National Cancer Institute, and the Clinical Director of the Health Psychology and Neurobehavioral Research Program. Her research focuses on ACT interventions for pediatric and adult medical populations, including sickle cell disease, cancer, and cancer predisposition syndromes. She has authored over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals, several of which have been recognized as a Feature Article or Editor’s Choice. Erin Pressman, LCSW-C, LICSW, is a clinical social worker and board-certified supervisor who has specialized in ACT for children, teens, and families for over ten years. She is an AMI certified Montessori Elementary school teacher and her background spans bilingual education, theater, and yoga work with youth. Erin is actively involved in training for professionals, research projects using ACT for teens, the development of ACT based protocols, and she runs ACT consultation groups for this population. She currently serves as Member at Large within the MAC- ACBS board. Erin is a Psychiatric Clinical Social Worker at Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Center for Developmental and Behavioral Health and works at True North Therapy and Training.
