The Athenaeum was established in 1814 as a subscription library, at a time when the free public library system did not exist and collections of books, available for reading or research, were still mostly limited to institutions, schools or colleges.The Athenaeum of Philadelphia nurtures curiosity in members and neighbors, strengthening community through learning and discourse.The Athenaeum of Philadelphia is one of 16 membership libraries that collaborate through the Membership Libraries Group. Some, like the Charleston (est. 1748), New York Society (est. 1754), and Newport (est. 1741) libraries, date from the 18th Century.

Join us at The Athenaeum for a First Friday event featuring a exhibition pop-up from local artists Pat and Phillip Singer.

About Pat:Pat Singer has always had a unique vision and looked at the world differently than most. She is a hunter and scavenger for ideas and juxtapositions. She enjoys rambling through wooded trails looking for inspiration, camera always at the ready. Her work is constantly evolving and recalibrating, and is a mix of paint, pen, and collage. Pat loves a good story, but is instead of with words, the stories are told with images. Through these images, the magic happens. Some of her favorite visual inspiration are textile patterns, plant life, ceramics, and folk art. These elements often find their way into her art as she finds them both familiar and stimulating. <a href="https://www.patsingerart.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.patsingerart.com/</a>About Phillip:Phillip Singer has been a working artist since 1989 when he graduated from The School of Visual Arts in New York city. In the early part of his career he created paintings for clients such as Celestial Seasonings Tea, Merck Pharmaceutical, Forbes Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, and numerous New York Publishers including Avon, Harper Collins and Viking Books. His first love was illustration. However, a desire to create his own paintings overtook his illustration career. All of those experiences contributed to the growth of his painting and helped shape his own version of realism. The most profound influence would be his instructor Marvin Mattelson. Currently his work combines illustration influences with his newly found appreciation for the painters of the 18th century and a strong affection for surrealism.
