The Czech Center New York actively promotes Czechia by showcasing Czech culture, innovations and creativity in the US. Our program includes concerts, screenings, exhibitions, panel discussions, and other events dedicated to a vast range of areas from visual and performing arts, film, literature, and music to architecture, design, fashion, and innovations. What can be seen with the electron microscope? Join Czech Scientist, Dr. Eliška Materna Mikmeková to find out!

Eliška Materna Mikmeková is a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Rutgers University, New Jersey, where she has been focusing on applications of advanced low energy electron microscopic/spectroscopic methods in (nano)-materials science. She is the head of Microscopy and Spectroscopy of Surfaces group at the department of Electron Microscopy in the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the Czech Academy of Sciences. She received Ph.D. in Physics in 2014 at the Masaryk University in Brno. After that, she went on with working as a Marie Curie postdoctoral fellow at the Thermo Fisher Scientific in Eindhoven, Netherlands. In 2017 she became a group leader in the Electron Microscopy department at the Institute of Scientific Instruments. She has published over 40 research papers focused on applications of low energy scanning electron microscopy in material science with more than 900 citations. In 2018 she finished her MBA studies at Cambridge Business School – Management and Leaderships.

Brno - Electron Microscopy ValleyBrno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, has emerged as the leader in the Electron Microscopy (EM) field, and now is responsible for 35% of the world’s production of these sophisticated scientific instruments. The origins of the electron microscopy boom in Brno can be traced back to 1950s when the world’s first commercially available tabletop electron microscope (Tesla BS242) was developed at the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The institute remains at the forefront of EM technology development and applications in nano-material science especially thanks to the Scanning Low Energy Electron Microscopy (SLEEM). This technique and its applications will be presented in the talk.This talk is presented in partnership with Fulbright Czech Republic.
