Second Star to the Rightis an Independent Bookstore in Denver! We cater to kids and teens, along with some adult selections as well. Besides books, we offer fun toys, a variety of events, and more. Most of our events are free, but require an RSVP to make sure we can accommodate everyone. Our events are welcoming, and a safe space for everyone.

Whether you can join us in person, or will be zooming in from home, we can&#x27;t wait to share these books with you.Join Second Star to the Right for an all day book-a-palooza celebrating all of the unsung book birthdays of 2020 from our very own SCBWI Rocky Mountain Chapter authors and illustrators! --Books are available as ticket add-ons for 10% off, available for pick-up at Second Star to the Right (price includes tax). We expect to have your books processed and ready for pickup (dependent on Publisher timelines) within 7 days of the event. Customers will be contacted by our team when your book is ready for pick-up at Second Star or has been shipped (must select Media Mail add-on for shipping).

Meet the Authors and Illustrators!<ul><li>Ana Crespo is happiest when surrounded by nature. So, Ana spends her summers traveling around the United States, visiting National Parks, and exploring some of the most beautiful places in America. She usually returns from her trips full of ideas for new stories. Ana considers herself lucky for having a career that allows her to keep her imagination alive way beyond her childhood years. Originally from Brazil, Ana lives in the beautiful Rocky Mountain region with her husband and kids.</li><li>Haven Iverson is an author and editor of children's literature living in Boulder, Colorado. I received my MFA as a fellow at the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas, Austin. Slow Down, Tumbleweed (Sounds True, 2021) is her first published children’s book.</li><li>Michelle Schaub is an award-winning children’s author and veteran teacher. Her book Fresh-Picked Poetry: A Day at the Farmers’ Market won the 2018 Growing Good Kids Award and 2019 Northern Lights Book Award. She is also the author of Finding Treasure: A Collection of Collections, an NCTE notable poetry book for 2020, and Dream Big, Little Scientists. Her poems appear in several anthologies, including The Poetry Anthology for Celebrations and Great Morning! Poems for School Leaders to Read Aloud. Michelle speaks at conferences on the power of poetry to boost literacy and shares ways to use poetry in the classroom on her blog POETRY BOOST, www.michelleschaub.blogspot.com. Follow Michelle on twitter @Schaubwrites.</li><li>Julie Hedlund is an award-winning children’s picture book author who spends much of her time inside her own imagination. When she is not writing or reading, she enjoys playing in the mountains near her home in Boulder, CO. She lives with her two teenage children and their high-maintenance hound dog. You can follow Julie on Twitter @juliefhedlund.</li><li>Bianca Schulze is the founder and editor of The Children's Book Review - a resource devoted to children's literature and literacy. Bianca is also the bestselling author of 101 Books to Read Before You Grow Up, an Amazon "Book of the Month" in 2016. She is a reader, reviewer, mother, and children's book lover. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Bianca now lives with her husband and three children near Boulder, Colorado.</li><li>Author, illustrator, bookseller, and activist: Julie Rowan-Zoch grew up collecting freckles and chasing hermit crabs in NY, and spent years slicing rich breads in Germany before waking up to 300 days of blue Colorado skies. If she doesn't answer the door, look in the garden!</li><li>Beth Anderson, a former English as a Second Language teacher, has always marveled at the power of books. Armed with linguistics and reading degrees, a fascination with language, and penchant for untold tales, she strives for accidental learning in the midst of a great story. Beth lives in Colorado where she laughs, wonders, thinks, and questions; and hopes to inspire kids to do the same.</li><li>Jolene Gutierrez grew up on a farm, surrounded by animals, plants, and history. She is an award-winning teacher-librarian and has been working with diverse learners at Denver Academy for the past 25 years. She holds a Master’s degree in Library Science. She’s a wife of 22 years and mama to two teenage humans, three preteen dogs, a kitten who plays fetch, and an ever-rotating variety of other animals including crested geckos, frogs, a ferret, and a rescue squirrel. She’s an active member of SCBWI and The Author’s Guild, a We Need Diverse Books mentorship finalist, a Writing with the Stars mentee, a Highlights Foundation scholarship winner, and the winner of the Cynthia Levinson nonfiction picture book biography scholarship to the Writing Barn. She’s an active member of the Perfect 2020 PBs group, a member of the critique group 6 Ladies and a MANuscript, and a co-creator of #KidlitZombieWeek.</li><li>Jessica Speer is an author focused on helping kids and families thrive. Her books engage and entertain readers by combining the stories of preteens and teens with fun activities and practical insights. She has a master’s degree in social sciences and explores social-emotional topics in ways that connect with kids. She is regularly featured in and contributes to media outlets on topics related to kids, parenting, and friendship. When she’s not typing away at her computer, she loves hiking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She lives in the mountains of Colorado with her husband and two daughters.</li><li>Jason Henderson is the author of Alex Van Helsing: Vampire Rising from HarperTeen, which has been named by the Texas Library Association to the 2011 Lone Star Reading List, a list of the top 20 books published in the previous year for young readers, 2011's Alex Van Helsing: Voice of the Undead, and 2012's Alex Van Helsing: The Triumph of Death. He lives in Colorado with his wife and two daughters. Ask him about school visits!</li><li>When Lisa Kaniut Cobb was substitute teaching, she was also honing her own writing skills in grad school. A conversation with a 2nd grade teacher about how to get students to edit their stories led to a writing program she designed for those kids as well as for the rest of the school. Before you knew it there was enough material for her book, Literary Ideas and Scripts for Young Playwrights. Nowadays, when she's not hiking the Colorado mountains or skiing, she's marketing her YA fantasy novel, The Netahs, Into the Wilderness, or writing book 2! It's set in Colorado and involves a secret society that can transform from animals to humans. Her hero, Josh, is only a halfling, but he's learning how to live among the Netahs. The alternative is unthinkable. The title word "Netahs" is based on words Lisa found in the Cheyenne language dictionary published at cdkc.edu/cheyennedictionary, and it means to change.</li><li>Todd Mitchell is the award-winning author of several books and comics for young readers and adults including The Last Panther (Penguin Random House), The Traitor King (Scholastic Press), The Secret to Lying (Candlewick Press), Backwards (Candlewick Press) and A Flight of Angels (DC). He has two new books coming out with Owl Hollow Press in Fall 2021—one for writers, artists, and other creators currently titled Breakthrough: How to Overcome Doubt, Fear, and Resistance So That You Can Be Your Ultimate Creative Self, and a middle grade novel that’s been optioned for film/TV development titled The Namer of Spirits. Todd’s books have twice won the Colorado Book Award, and his middle grade novel The Last Panther won several national awards including the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature and the Green Earth Honor Book Award. In addition to his books, he’s published short stories, essays, and poems in national and international journals. Currently, he serves as Director of the Beginning Creative Writing Teaching Program at Colorado State University. He lives in Fort Collins, Colorado with his wife, dog, and two wily daughters. Freeman attended an elementary school where poets visited her classroom every week to teach poetry and she has been a writer ever since. She writes middle grade and young adult fiction, and her debut middle grade novel-in-verse ALONE is available from Simon &amp; Schuster/Aladdin. Megan is also a Pushcart Prize-nominated poet, and her poetry collection, Lessons on Sleeping Alone, was published by Liquid Light Press. An award-winning teacher with decades of classroom experience, Megan is nationally recognized for her work leading workshops and speaking to audiences across the country. Megan used to live in northeast Los Angeles, central Ohio, northern Norway, and on Caribbean cruise ships. Now she lives in northern Colorado. </li><li>Andrea Wang is the award-winning author of the picture books The Nian Monster, Magic Ramen, and Watercress. The Many Meanings of Meilan is her debut middle-grade novel. The first character in Andrea’s Chinese name is an archaic one that means fragrant, but her parents’ friends all thought it was the character for jade, which sounds exactly the same. That sparked her lifelong interest in names and identity. She’d much rather be a rock than smelly. Andrea likes to write about family, food, and culture. She spent her childhood in Ohio and Boston and now lives in Colorado with her family.</li><li>Claudia Mills has written many children’s books, including 7 x 9 = Trouble!, the Franklin School Friends series, The After-School Superstar series, and Zero Tolerance. She recently received the Kerlan Award for her contribution to children’s literature. She was a professor of philosophy for more than two decades at the University of Colorado and is now a faculty member in the graduate programs in children’s literature at Hollins University.
