Maximizing AAC Potential Through Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Join UCF CHPS as we welcome occupational therapist Michael Braun from Brooks Rehabilitation as he discusses strategies for collaboration between speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and occupational therapists (OTs) in providing multidisciplinary intervention for individuals who require augmentative and alternative communication. Using live beam demonstrations of assistive technology equipment via UCF’s cutting-edge Hologram Technology (in partnership with Brooks Rehab), the audience will be provided with case study examples of how SLPs and OTs may work together to improve outcomes for patients. Michael will be joined by UCF CHPS faculty panelists Julie Feuerstein, Punam Desormes, and Jennifer Kent-Walsh to provide additional perspectives on collaborative AAC service-delivery and research happenings at UCF. Zoom and onsite participation in Innovation Center, Suite 700 are both encouraged.THE VIRTUAL LINK WILL BE SENT IN THE REGISTRATION CONFIRMATION!Michael Braun, MSOT, OTR/L, BCPRMichael Braun is an Occupational Therapist at Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, FL. He is a past-graduate of the OT Neurologic Fellowship Program at Brooks and received his Board Certification in Physical Rehabilitation from AOTA. Michael developed the Assistive Technology Program at Brooks Rehabilitation and currently serves in a specialist role treating clients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, collaborating with staff, and seeking out new and innovative technologies to bring to Brooks. Michael is also the Program Coordinator for the Brooks OT Neurologic Fellowship Program. He has over 11 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist and has served as volunteer coach of the Brooks Adaptive Sports power soccer team since 2012. Punam Desormes, M.A., CCC-SLP, ATPPunam Desormes is a speech-language pathologist, assistive technology professional, faculty clinical instructor, and co-director of the undergraduate program in communication sciences and disorders at the University of Central Florida. She specializes in providing services to individuals with complex communication needs including use of assistive technology/augmentative and alternative communication. Punam Desormes has 15+ years of experience working with a wide range of populations in the school, private clinic, and university settings.Julie Feuerstein, Ph.D, CCC-SLPJulie Feuerstein is a speech-language pathologist and assistant professor at the University of Central Florida where she teaches and conducts research related to language disorders in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, early intervention service delivery, and implementation of research evidence into clinical practice settings.Jennifer Kent-Walsh, Ph.D, S-LP(C), CCC-SLP, F-ASHA Jennifer Kent-Walsh, PhD., CCC-SLP, FLASHA Honoree, ASHA Fellow, is a Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders, the Director of the Assistive Technology Demonstration Center / AAC Lab, and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Health Professions and Sciences at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Dr. Kent-Walsh and her research collaborators, including primary research collaborator Dr. Cathy Binger, develop and evaluate interventions designed to improve language and communication outcomes for children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Dr. Kent-Walsh teaches in the areas of AAC and assistive technology at ICF and has published research findings widely in the speech-language pathology literature. She is currently a Principal Investigator for research projects and programs funded by the Chesley G. Magruder Foundation, the Florida Alliance for Assistive Technology and Services, the WITH Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health (NIDCD).
