Join us on a guided hike as we move through rolling hills and meadows to analyze grassland habitats transitioning through fall.

Paramount Ranch

Oaks will bear acorns and the sages will wake you up with their fragrant leaves as they begin to grow back from the summer sleep. We will be visiting Narrowleaf milkweed off trail, the host plant for monarch butterflies, making friends, and studying the effects of human interaction with the plant. The Chumash, Tongva, Tatavium Nations use milkweed in many ways. Items can be made from different parts of the plant either on their own or mixed with other materials to make rope, clothing, gum, and a snack source.You will be part of a project looking to show human's involvement and necessity in ecosystems, as well as highlight the positive impact of Indigenous management. Meet us at Paramount Ranch for a short nature hike. Volunteers will be shown how to pair plants for analysis, be given measuring tools and instructions for treatment and control variables. They will take data on the size of each plant using their cellphones or provided forms and be able to track next year's growth. After participants interact and name their plants we’ll head back to organize the removed plant material.Nearly all work will occur on uneven terrain, generally within a mile of the designated parking lots. Participants must be prepared to walk on uneven terrain, rattlesnake-inhabited territory, and in areas where ticks are present. Participants will be allowed to borrow snake gaiters to protect their legs. Milkweed meadows are fully exposed to the sun. All participants must bring a minimum of 1 liter of water per person, with no exceptions.
