Independent Opera Company begins its tenth season with two rarely performed one-act operas by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: “Mozart and Salieri“ and “Kashchey the Immortal”.The basis and inspiration of Peter Shaffer’s play “Amadeus“ and Miloš Forman’s 1984 film adaptation comes from the 1830 verse drama “Mozart and Salieri“ written by Alexander Pushkin. The one-act opera of the same name, composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1897, uses Pushkin’s text almost verbatim in the Russian libretto, following a fateful meeting between the two composers. Kashchey the Immortal, by the composer&#x27;s description, is &quot;An Autumn fairy tale&quot; that is juxtaposed to his previous &quot;Spring tale&quot; “The Snow Maiden”, performed by IOC in 2019. Based on Russian folklore, Kashchey tells the enchanting story of an evil old magician desperately seeking immortality by heavily guarding the key to his death.
