A talk by Prof. Paul Siqueira, Professor, University of Massachusetts Amherst.Solving Maxwell’s Equations in the WoodsAbstract:Remote sensing is an interdisciplinary field of study that requires knowledge in a a variety of engineering and earth science applications.  As engineers we learn to solve problems at the crossroads of physics, mathematics and technology.  In this talk, Prof. Siqueira will discuss how a background in microwave engineering and probability theory can be used with remote sensing to address some of the more pressing problems of the day.Speaker Bio:Prof. Paul Siqueira is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, and is co-Director of the University’s Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL). In previous appointments, he has been a senior engineer at NASA’s Jet Laboratory, a visiting scientist for the European Commission in Ispra, Italy, and a Bullard Fellow at Harvard’s forest research station in Massachusetts. His work within MIRSL is in the design, development and use of microwave remote sensing instruments for earth science applications. While at UMass, Professor Siqueira has developed airborne Interferometric SAR’s that work at S-, Ku- and Ka-band frequencies, which are used for studying the remote sensing signatures of vegetation, soils, and snow. Professor Siqueira is also the Ecosystems Science Lead for NISAR, a joint NASA/ISRO L- and S-band SAR mission due to be launched in 2023. Prof. Siqueira teaches courses in microwave engineering, microwave metrology, and microwave systems engineering. He is a principal investigator within NASA’s Terrestrial Ecology, Terrestrial Hydrology and Earth Science Technology programs.
