Piano Solo: Charles Ives - Concord, Mass., 1840-60
A live performance of Ives' Second Piano Sonata, noted for its extremely dense writing and use of leitmotifs.
Tim Everitt is a classically trained pianist. He will play the Second Piano Sonata. The formal name of the sonata is Concord, Mass., 1840-1860. It was composed between 1905 and 1915. Ives never considered the piece finished, and tinkered with it his entire life. This performance will be from the very first score Ives released in 1920. Ives gave the piece to his friend John Kirkpatrick, who premiered it at Carnegie Hall on January 20, 1939.
