501(c)(3) Advocacy in the Here and Now: How to Influence Policy for the Greater Good

As the advocacy and lobbying landscape has shifted dramatically over the past year, many nonprofit organizations have found themselves asking questions about what they can and cannot do. Given the dynamic nature of doing policy work as a nonprofit in the present day, we seek to help provide you with information to continue and build on your existing policy capacity. This workshop will cover the basics of nonprofit policy and advocacy, in addition to providing an understanding on recent federal and state policy-related items.Participants will learn:<ul><li>How federal tax law permits lobbying for charities and how lobbying is defined</li><li>Federal executive orders, relevant state laws, and funding considerations/strategies for both (c)(3)s and (c)(4)s.</li><li>One easy step most charities can take to maximize the amount they’re allowed to spend on lobbying</li><li>Yearly lobbying limits for charities</li><li>Tips for taking advantage of the narrow definitions of lobbying – which will help charities make the most of their lobbying limit</li><li>How to apply these rules to ballot measure activities.</li></ul>Bolder Advocacy equips nonprofits with the knowledge they need to be confident and powerful advocates. Our staff attorneys conduct <a href="https://bolderadvocacy.org/training-and-events/" title="https://bolderadvocacy.org/training-and-events/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">workshops and trainings</a> around the country and one-on-one <a href="https://bolderadvocacy.org/resource-library/technical-assistance/" title="https://bolderadvocacy.org/resource-library/technical-assistance/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">technical assistance</a> by phone and email. Our coaching helps nonprofit leaders become stronger advocates for their missions and empowers them to speak up.In addition to our trainings, Bolder Advocacy provides nonprofits and foundations with <a href="https://bolderadvocacy.org/resource-library/" title="https://bolderadvocacy.org/resource-library/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">accessible information, resources and tools</a> to help them navigate complex advocacy rules and regulations.
