Event description
Ticketed tour & workshop segment in the afternoon will be followed by community connection in the evening. Join us for both!

About this event

Come bask in the glory of Dr. and Mrs. Duke's lovingly curated global plant collection and lush grounds. Learn about the garden, its founders, and its treasures; join our communal harvest and learn a medicinal or practical preparation; share your gifts with other participants; explore the woods; or just bring a picnic and enjoy the setting! The day is yours.

We're changing the format for this Community Day. The ticketed instructional portion of the day, from 1-5pm, will comprise our annual Turmeric Harvest workshop, tours of the garden and grounds, and a fruit-leather demonstration using invasive autumn berries (aka autumn olives). Ticket-holders and members of the public are welcome to connect and commune in the evening around the fire with a potluck meal.

Schedule

  • 12:30 Grounds Open to ticket-holders
  • 1:00 Tour of The Green Farmacy Garden
  • 2:00 Turmeric Harvest & Repot
  • 3:30 Edible Plant Walk incl. Autumn Berry Harvest & Fruit Leather

Located in Fulton, Maryland, The Green Farmacy Garden is a sanctuary for approximately 300 native and non-native species of plants that have been used traditionally and/or researched for medicinal applications. USDA botanist James A. Duke, PhD, and his wife, Peggy, collected medicinal plants for over sixty years.  In 1997, they transformed part of their pasture land into a teaching garden highlighting the plants that are featured in Jim’s book, The Green Pharmacy.

The Green Farmacy Garden is also a part of the United Plant Savers network of sanctuaries around the country, which strive to educate the public and maintain native plant species that have become at risk or endangered.

Since the garden is located on a large parcel of land, we are always in need of volunteers to help. We are also receptive to students who wish to work on independent projects with medicinal plants.

Tours to the public are on scheduled days or by appointment.
