2021 PROXY Fall Film Festival: JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

PROXY is a temporary two-block project located in San Francisco which seeks to mobilize a flexible environment of food, art, culture, and retail within renovated shipping containers. PROXY is both a response and solution to the ever changing urban lifecycle, existing as a temporary placeholder and an instigator of evolving cultural curiosities in art, food, retail and events. Our design embraces the vast diversity of a city and encourages the rotation of new ideas and businesses as well as innovative public art installations which come and go like new visitors at the site.

That’s not a spoiler, just history, and I’d argue that knowing his fate in advance is crucial to an appreciation of “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Though it plays at times like a crime thriller — with stakeouts and shootouts, chases and interrogations — the movie is better understood as a political tragedy. Produced by Oakland native Ryan Coogler and directed by Shaka King, the film masterfully explores the history throughout the narrative format, exposing this very recent installment of the federal government’s surveillance and intentional destruction of Black communities. All PROXY staff will be wearing masks when interacting with the audience.
