Masterclass with Jay Liu, San Francisco Symphony Associate Principal Viola

450 K-12 students from over 100 schools from San Francisco to Santa Cruz train and perform in five orchestras and four ensembles, led by the award-winning, internationally recognized Symphony Orchestra. Concerts, tours, retreats, summer workshops, masterclasses and music festivals form a vital part of the GSYO experience, creating opportunities for youth at all levels of musical experience to develop socially and artistically while participating in the Bay Area's foremost instrumental training and education program

Yun Jie Liu is Associate Principal Viola of the San Francisco Symphony. Born in Shanghai, he began his violin studies with his father. He entered the middle school of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and was named assistant professor of viola upon graduation. In 1990, he was invited by Mstislav Rostropovich to join the National Symphony in Washington DC. Mr. Liu regularly gives chamber music concerts and solo recitals in venues in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Washington DC, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Yun Jie Liu joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1993. He currently serves on the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory.Mr. Liu will lead a masterclass featuring GSYO Symphony viola players: Ethan Solomon, Alan Wang, and Hanna Pan. The event provides a learning opportunity for performers as well as observers.TICKETSThis event has a suggested donation of $15. Tickets must be purchased in advance and downloaded or printed prior to arrival (to scan for entry). Tickets will not be available to buy the day of the event.COVID-19 SAFETY POLICYIn keeping with Santa Clara County guidelines, face coverings, regardless of vaccination status are required while indoors.
