The Haunting of Hull-House: Nighttime History Tours

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum(JAHHM)draws upon the legacy of international peace activist and feminist, Jane Addams, and other social reformers who worked, alongside their immigrant neighbors, to create social change on the Near West Side of Chicago during the Progressive Era. The Museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision. Exhibitions and public programs elevate histories of activism, progressive education and democratic principles of participation and exchange, and connect them to present-day social justice issues.

<p>Visit Hull-House for a nighttime history tour led by an experienced Hull-House Educator. Engage with stories from the settlement’s past, when immigrant neighbors responded to the rapid transformations of industrialism with tales of imagination and horror.&nbsp;</p><p>From its inception, the Hull-House settlement was a&nbsp;center of <a href="https://www.hullhousemuseum.org/hullhouse-blog/2022/9/14/findingfolklore" title="https://www.hullhousemuseum.org/hullhouse-blog/2022/9/14/findingfolklore" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">urban legends and supernatural stories</a>, an oral tradition kept alive by neighbors who imagined unearthly inhabitants who lived at the settlement. For many, Chicago was a place of great hardship, plagued by&nbsp;a history of tragic events that left countless ghost stories in their&nbsp;wake, including those of <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1916/10/the-devil-baby-at-hull-house/305428/" title="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1916/10/the-devil-baby-at-hull-house/305428/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hull-House's infamous Devil Baby</a> and resident Lady in White. While they are spooky and fun, these stories stem from important conversations about religious&nbsp;beliefs and social norms,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;the collective consciousness of the Hull-House neighborhood. They&nbsp;often&nbsp;highlight the struggles of new immigrants in the city&nbsp;and the gruesome conditions they faced due to capitalist exploitation. </p>
