Movies at Mechanics' Presents On Golden Pond (1981)
Join us for another film screening followed by a discussion - hosted by Lara Gabrielle.
Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda star in a tranquil exploration of family and aging, set against the backdrop of a peaceful New England lake. On Golden Pond marks the final film in the illustrious career of Henry Fonda, giving him his first Academy Award for Best Actor. Katharine Hepburn also won an Academy Award for Best Actress, her fourth, crowning her the most decorated actress in Oscar history–a record that still stands today.
Norman and Ethel Thayer, an elderly couple summering at their home in Maine, receive their daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda) and her fiancé as visitors. They bring along the fiancé’s pre-teen son, whom the younger couple leaves with Norman and Ethel for a solo vacation. As the bond strengthens between the Thayers and the young boy, the strained relationship between Norman and their daughter comes into focus.
By the time On Golden Pond was filmed, Jane Fonda was a bona fide star in her own right, independent of her famous father. The real-life relationship between Henry and Jane Fonda was difficult–markedly similar to that of Norman and Chelsea in the film. The experience of making On Golden Pond helped to heal the rift between them, and when Henry Fonda won Best Actor at the Academy Awards, he was too ill to attend the ceremony. His daughter Jane accepted the award on his behalf.
Join us for a poignant meditation on aging, love, and family relationships as we round out our monthlong tribute to the two Hepburns. As always, please come 15 minutes early to see the pre-show of vintage clips, newsreels, and advertisements!

“Author Gabrielle has given us a gift: an honest biography of a woman whose life and career have long been misunderstood. . . . In short, this is the book Marion Davies has always deserved.”-Leonard Maltin, film critic and historian
