On the occasion of The Quay Brothers’ long awaited new feature SANATORIUM UNDER THE SIGN OF THE HOURGLASS, 7th House is proud to present a very rare LA screening of Polish cinematic master Wojciech Jerzy Has’s hallucinatory masterpiece THE HOURGLASS SANATORIUM (1973), the original adaptation of surrealist modernist Bruno Schulz’s labyrinthine story cycle — gorgeously restored in 4K!  A dazzling, dreamlike masterpiece of 1970s world cinema, Has’s breathtaking and brainbending adaptation plunges viewers into a strange dimension where memory, fantasy, and reality dissolve into one another. Józef (Jan Nowicki) visits his dying father in a crumbling sanatorium, only to find himself wandering through shifting corridors of childhood memories, spectral figures, and uncanny rituals. Time folds, spaces melt, and every image radiates an eerie, painterly beauty that feels at once psychedelic and mournful. Has conjures these shifting realms in hypnotic long takes, lush colors, and baroque tableaux that feel less like cinema than like stepping into a living dream. Adapted from the stories of Polish-Jewish writer Bruno Schulz, the film becomes both a phantasmagoric odyssey and a séance for a world destroyed by the Holocaust. Has—himself half-Jewish—layers his mesmerizing visuals with historical subtext, evoking the loss of Jewish culture in prewar Poland and responding to the anti-Semitic purges of 1968. Best known for The Saragossa Manuscript (1965) – widely considered the greatest Polish film of all time, Wojciech Jerzy Has pushes even further here into the realm of the uncanny, crafting a nonlinear, oneiric work that defies narrative logic yet lingers in the subconscious.
