BAV will host national expert Woody Lane to present on pasture management and nutrition for graziers at Kinderhook Farm. For more than 20 years Woody has taught dozens of practical courses on forage management and livestock nutrition across North America, and will join us in the Berkshire-Taconic region for a deep dive on managing animal nutrition in grazing systems.This workshop is great for graziers who want to better understand managing feed quality for animals in grazing systems, and how nutrition contributes to animal performance on grass.Topics include:<ul><li>Useful nutritional terms</li><li>Forage nutritional value - differences in 1st, 2nd, 3rd cuttings</li><li>Grazing principles for high quality feed</li><li>Matching pasture nutritional value with livestock production level</li><li>Pasture walks and what to look for</li><li>Reading a forage test report</li><li>Reading a feed tag</li><li>Minerals &amp; vitamins</li><li>Nutritional health issues on pasture</li><li>Ways to reduce the need for stored feed</li></ul> LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED, please contact Ben Crockett if you have any dietary restrictions (ben@berkshireagventures.org) To minimize biosecurity risks and disease transfer between farms, please wear boots you don't wear on your own farm OR boots you can wash OR be prepared to wear 'booties' over the shoes you wear. Woody Lane is a nationally known expert on pasture management, sheep and beef cattle nutrition, and grazing. His passion for sharing knowledge comes across in all he does, including his writing. People who have read his writings on forages say they will never look at a field the same way again. Woody earned his PhD degree in animal nutrition from Cornell University. In the 1980s, Woody was the State Sheep and Beef Cattle Extension Specialist for the University of Wisconsin. In 1990, he moved to western Oregon and began his business Lane Livestock Services, an independent consulting firm working directly with farmers and ranchers.Woody has been featured in many of the top conferences across the United States and Canada. He has taught dozens of practical courses on forage management and livestock nutrition. For more than 20 years, he facilitated three innovative forage discussion groups for farmers and ranchers in Oregon. Woody is passionate about using science to guide decisions and solve practical field problems. He can’t look at a pasture without wanting to improve it. Woody has written hundreds of popular articles and fact sheets on sheep and cattle production and grazing. He has also published more than 25 research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
