Join  University of Pittsburgh's Society of Women Engineers for a High School Engineering Exploration Event!

The registration for SWE's High School Engineering Exploration Challenge has concluded. Come back and join us for our spring session!

Boys and girls in grades 9-12 are invited to Pitt SWE’s High School Virtual Engineering Exploration Challenge! This program will consist of three sessions and will take place on Saturdays, October 16, 2021 to October 30, 2021 through Zoom. The goal of this event is to expose and introduce high schoolers to different types of engineering disciplines ranging from bioengineering to electrical engineering to mechanical engineering and more. In order to fulfill this goal, students will have the option to attend panels with Pitt students in various engineering disciplines that students may be interested in. Not only will they attend panels, but high schoolers will also be presented with a challenge in the field of engineering they select to learn more about. The challenge will involve them creating a prototype/presentation for an innovative prompt in that respective engineering discipline so they can explore more about the discipline they chose. Students will be assigned a group with other high schoolers who also express interest in the same engineering discipline and they also will be assigned a college mentor to help them through the engineering challenge. For this program, students may need to work outside of the dedicated brainstorming sessions over the month of October to further brainstorm their solution and design their prototype and presentation. Prizes will be awarded for best prototypes! Registration for this event will be limited and on a first come first serve basis. Please fill out the Eventbrite if you anticipate being able to come to all three sessions and work on the challenge outside of the dedicated challenge sessions. All attendees will need a device to access Zoom for this workshop. More information regarding Zoom will be sent after you register.The tentative schedule of sessions for this program is as follows:October 16th, 10AM-1:30PM- Introduction of the engineering exploration challenge - Explanation of what the challenge and competition consist of- Participants will get to attend 3 engineering panels with current Pitt engineering students and will explore 3 main disciplines of engineering - Participants will then be assigned to teams with students that have similar engineering interests and will be assigned a mentor of that particular engineering field- 1st brainstorming session with mentor October 23rd, 10AM-1PM- Presentation by First Year Engineering academic advisor on Pitt engineering- Overall Pitt Engineering Student panel discussing engineering at Pitt, college life, and how to get ready for a career in engineering - 2nd brainstorming session with mentorsOctober 30th - 10AM-1PM- Presentation by participants- Announcement of winners &amp; closing
