Morgan Horse Ranch

Difficulty level: EasyDistance: 1 mileThe Morgan Horse Ranch was established in 1970 and served as a breeding and training program that provided horses for rangers throughout the National Park Service for almost 30 years. As other National Parks began buying their own horses from local breeders, the demand for horses from the Morgan Horse Ranch at Point Reyes dwindled. Consequently, the last filly—Los Reyes Liberty Rose, Rose for short—was born at the ranch in 1999.Regardless, the Ranch remained and continued to serve Point Reyes National Seashore. During this talk, you’ll join Park Rangers Bonnie Phillips and Julie Byerly on a tour of the history and importance of the Morgan Horse Ranch. You will also have the opportunity to meet the herd, including its two newest members—Knight Hawk (age 7) and Gentry (age 7)—whose acquisition was supported by PRNSA members who helped fund $22,000 this year to expand the herd.Park Rangers, including tour leads Bonnie and Julie, use the Morgans for patrol deep into the backcountry and along the beaches so as to not disturb the natural beauty of Point Reyes National Seashore. In addition, each Morgan horse also serves as a connection between rangers and visitors, thus heightening our outreach and educational goals. With a growing Morgan Horse herd, Chief Ranger Julie Byerly hopes to expand the number of professionally trained Mounted Officers in the park as well. “I would love to see a four-horse unit of strong patrol horses that could do patrol, rescues, and public events.”This Picnic on the Pacific Plate tour will begin at the Morgan Horse Ranch, directly next door to the PRNSA office. If you are interested in a short stroll where you will learn about the fascinating ranch history AND meet the Seashores’ favorite Morgan herd, this is the “hike” for you!

Details:<ul><li>We will be meeting at the Morgan Horse Ranch near Bear Valley Visitor Center</li><li>The hike will begin at 2:00pm, but please arrive 15 minutes early (1:45pm) to check in and to allow time for COVID safety protocols (see below)</li><li>Please give at least 48 hours of notice if you decide to no longer attend the hike</li><li>Please provide an email you check regularly for updates and reminders about your class </li><li>Registration is required online prior to the event in order to maintain class sizes</li><li>Sales end 48 hours before the start date</li><li>Waitlists are available when the class sells out</li></ul>
