City Blossoms is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that cultivates the well-being of our communities through creative kid-driven gardens.Since 2008, City Blossoms has designed, developed, collaborated on, and provided programming or trainings for over 100 projects throughout Washington, DC and nationwide. Our work serves Black, Latino, and children of immiagrant backgrounds, ages 2-19.Applying our unique brand of gardens, science, art, healthy living, and community building, we "blossom" in neighborhoods where kids, their families, and neighbors may not otherwise have access to green spaces. City Blossoms Community Green Space Workday Volunteer Event: The Farm at Kelly Miller Youth Garden Location: 301 49th St. NE (located behind Kelly Miller Middle School, next to the Kelly Miller Recreation Center and Pool) When: Friday, September 24, 2021 | 2pm-5pmAbout This Garden: The Farm at Kelly Miller is a collaborative space, managed by multiple DC-based nonprofits. This space functions as both a production farm as well as Community Green Space for all ages. The City Blossoms team manages the Farm’s Youth Garden, where we provide free drop-in programming for children, including cooking tutorials, crafts, and maintenance activities. This space is provided by DC’s Department of Recreation, and co-managed by Dreaming Out Loud, Beet Street Gardens, and City Blossoms. Details: We will convene at 2pm within the garden to do a quick introduction before splitting up into smaller working groups. We hope to tackle quite a bit of weeding, planting, and some painting projects with our participants, and assisting our partners from Dreaming Out Loud and Beet Street Gardens with their plots and in-ground beds. Please dress in outdoor work clothes as well as closed toe shoes. Participants are encouraged to bring water bottles, sunscreen, and bug spray. City Blossoms will provide all gloves and tools. Please note that City Blossoms will host this workday rain or shine, unless otherwise specified. Parking Instructions: There will be some parking available within the school’s parking lot (just down the hill from the garden) as well as along the residential side streets surrounding the farm. Bikes can be locked to bike racks along the school and pool or along the Farm’s fence, which extends the property. Metro Instructions: This garden is about a 10 minute walk from the Benning Road Metro Station (Blue/Silver line). It is also easily accessible by way of the 96, 97, U5, U6, W4 buses (East Capitol St. &amp; 49th St. NE), which is a 5 minute walk away.
