Pacifica District Hiking Merit Badge - 20 Mile Hike

GLAAC Pacifica District is offering this rugged hike in the nearby Gabrielino National Recreation Trail to help Scouts complete their Hiking Merit Badge.

This is only open to Scouts who will have completed the 5 mile , three ten mile, and the 15 mile hikes for the Hiking Merit Badge by the date of this hike. Due to the strenuous nature of this hike, we recommend that Scouts be at least 14 years old or have extensive experience on rugged trails.

20 Mile Hike - January 8, 2022 (time: 7:30am - to be confirmed)

• Hike the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail from base to summit
• Start & End: Jet Propulsion Lab trailhead, Pasadena
• Elevation gain: 2000’; Miles: 20; Estimated hiking time: 11 hours
• We will complete the hike after dark so bring a flashlight
• Rain or shine (severe weather will cause hike to be rescheduled)

Required Equipment

• Ten Essentials (including PLENTY of water!)
• Sturdy footwear (trail runners or running shoes are good, hiking boots are OK too)

There will be a mandatory Zoom meeting with participants beforehand for a gear check and to go over final instructions. An email will be sent in December with the date and time of the meeting - please expect to attend.

Parents and scoutmasters are welcome to hike with us, but adults must be in shape, i.e. have completed several 10 mile hikes and a 15 mile hike fairly recently. Parents can sign up as part of their Scout's registration. Other adults attending without a Scout should contact Sheila Stewart at sheandjc@yahoo.com to sign up.
