Bridging Communities

Sofa Stories is a community arts project using living theatre and digital media to amplify the stories of young Detroiters who have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity and have resorted to couch-surfing as a means to survive.Since late 2019 the Sofa Stories team has been working with young people at the Detroit Phoenix Center to create a series of short monologues that all explore homelessness/housing issues in some capacity. Physically distanced, in-person performances will take place in Detroit in August &amp; September 2021 in outdoor locations across the city. At each performance, a selection of monologues will be performed by actors sitting on sofas to one audience member (or pair) at a time. At the end of each performance, audiences will also hear from young people from the Detroit Phoenix Center and learn more about what they can do to help end youth homelessness. Short films of select monologues will also be available to watch online in late 2021. The project is made possible with funding from the <a href="https://knightfoundation.org/press/releases/knight-winning-ideas-to-share-over-1-3-million-in-the-knight-arts-challenge-detroit/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">2019 Knight Arts Challenge Detroit</a> and additional support from <a href="https://floydhome.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Floyd </a>and <a href="https://tripwipes.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Trip Wipes</a>.Bridging Communities PerformanceSofa Stories Detroit will perform at Bridging Communities on Saturday, September 11th. Performances will occur in 40-minute blocks throughout the day between 11 am and 6:10 pm. Anyone interested in attending can reserve a ticket to a performance at various times throughout the day (click on REGISTER to see specific times). To help us stay on schedule throughout the day and keep crowd numbers to a minimum, we ask that audience members arrive at least 5 minutes before the start time of their scheduled performance and leave the site after their performance has ended.We ask that guests limit to one audience member at a time or two audience members from the same household. If you are coming as two members from the same household, you only need to book ONE ticket. Admission to the event is free, but donations are accepted to support the costs of the project. We suggest a $10 donation per audience member, but you are welcome to donate more or less if you wish. With this in mind, we understand that some pieces may cause distress or trigger challenging emotions for some of our audience members. For this reason, Sofa Stories Detroit is recommended for audiences aged 14 and older. Some monologues featured in this project include sensitive subject matter, including strong language and mentions of suicide, death, and domestic abuse. If you’d like to know more about any of the pieces included on a specific performance date, you are welcome to reach out to us at sofastoriesdetroit@gmail.com.COVID-19 PolicyBased on current state guidelines, we feel confident that we will be able to produce our events safely to ensure the health and wellness of both our creative team and audiences. All in-person events as part of this project will be following the law. With this in mind, here are some of our current practices in place for all in-person performances of Sofa Stories Detroit:All in-person performances will take place outdoors in various locations across the city of Detroit.All performers and creative team members are vaccinated. While we will not ask for proof of vaccinations from audience members, for the safety and comfort of our team, all audience members will be asked to wear masks during the performance (which will last approximately 40 minutes).To limit the number of people gathered at any one time, audience members will be asked to book a time to experience the performance and only remain on-site during the time they booked. Audience members will experience the performance seated on a sofa 6 feet apart from the performer(s). Audience members and performers will perform under canopies to avoid direct sunlight/extreme heat. Hand sanitizer and disposable masks will be provided to all audience members upon arrival.Being in good relation with the community means we are all responsible to keep community members, artists, staff, and volunteers safe. For this reason, we ask that audience members do NOT attend a performance if they:<ul><li>Have symptoms of infectious illness or have been exposed to someone who has confirmed or suspected COVID-19 within the past 14 days</li><li>Have traveled internationally in the past 14 days or visited a location confirmed to be a source of a COVID-19 outbreak</li><li>Have a body temperature of 100.4 or higher, unexplained, or abnormal coughing, sneezing, sore throat, fatigue, or difficulty breathing</li><li>Believe they may be carrying or are ill with COVID-19</li></ul>These policies are subject to change depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and the spread of variants, state laws, and company decisions. Inclement Weather PolicyIn the event of extreme heat and/or rain, outdoor performances might be rescheduled, or canceled. In either event, audience members who have reserved a ticket for a canceled event will be notified via email and donations will be refunded upon request.
