We’ll celebrate our 7th Edition of UBAF with a full day of International film, art and music, specially selected to inspire and unify the entire community! Funky, exotique, hypnotique DJ sets will connect the films. We’ll also have Q &amp; A sessions with guests and directors from around the world. This is a real opportunity for a unique exchange !!!We’re bringing sights and sounds from the Republics of Congo, Morocco, Cameroon, Somalia, France and Italy. Visual art and a Photography Exhibition from Paris, France will highlight the evening and a Dance Party will round out the night.Last year's UBAF Independent Film Night garnered social media discussion threads 5 months after the festival was over !!!This year will be no different !!!Music, Art, Films, Discussion and Poetry from around the world.Including several US premieres (FILM NEVER BEFORE SHOW IN THE UNITED STATES!!!) as well as a world premiere.* SPECIAL MENTIONS *NOT TO BE MISSED !!!!"Lioness of the Jungle"and"Empire de Silence"

For twenty-five years, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been torn apart by a war largely ignored by the media and the international community. The victims number in the hundreds of thousands, even millions. The perpetrators of these crimes are countless: rebel movements, but also armies, those of the Congo and neighboring countries. Everyone seems caught in a daze of killings, for power, for money, to monopolize the riches of the Congo with complete impunity, in general indifference. Traveling the Congo with camera in hand for thirty years, Thierry Michel has witnessed the fighting, the suffering but also the hopes of the Congolese people. Relaying the plea of Doctor Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize winner, he retraces the sequences of this merciless violence which has ravaged and ruined the Congo for a quarter of a century.

Experimental poetic video dealing with the life perspectives of racialised people living in Italy. People between 4 and 40 years old contribute to this work, in this intergenerational lens: complexity, conflicts, sense of community and fantasy emerge.

A group of girls founds a gang, this is not just a made-up story, it really exists and it is the BFF gang.

The BFF gang meets in a small wooden house every week and starts to write a story, which apparently seems fictional but says so much about the reality we live in.

Coal Black Voices is an intimate mosaic of images, poetry, and storytelling by the Affrilachian Poets as they give glimpses of life in the American Black South and Appalachian region. The ensemble of African-American writers challenge simple notions of an all white Appalachian region and culture while drawing on traditions such as the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, and experiences of the African Diaspora. The poetry of the Affrilachian Poets celebrates their African heritage and rural roots while encompassing themes of racism and Black identity. In this documentary they give voice to the pleasures of family, land, good food, artistic community, music and transformation.

Directors Discussion (Q&A)

This experimental essay film was created by Napoleon Maddox in 2020 as  a part of Brianna Matzke's “Response Project” series, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. This Response Project was presented in partnership with the  Peace Resource Center at Wilmington College.

Music Break

Calypso Rose is an ambassador of Caribbean music. Living legend of Calypso music, she is a charismatic character often compared to the great Soul singers such as Aretha Franklin. She did a reprise of her famous song Say a Little Prayer for You, or Miriam Makeba, with who she will sing Voodoo Lay Loo in the eighties. This music, in its' rebellious and mocking style, is Trinidad & Tobago's soul, ex English colony, located in the Caribbean sea.
Born in the village of Bethel in Tobago in 1940, she has been singing since the age of 15 years and hasn't stopped spreading the daily tales of her native island, on the world stages, with an inbred energy and a contagious love for life. IN 1978, she will become the first woman to be crowned Calypso Queen during Trinidad's famous carnival, (which after her win, was changed to the title of Calypso Monarch). During her career, she wrote more than 800 songs and recorded 25 albums, making her the uncontested diva of Calypso.
