Nov. 10 & 12 - Our expedition will begin on Wednesday evening with an online class to help you get ready. We'll discuss tips and techniques for great wildlife photos, including:
- Choosing a composition for strong impact
- Understanding animal behavior to help you capture a great photo
- Proper use of telephoto and all-in-one zoom lenses
- Making the light work for you, and more.
Then we'll meet up bright and early Friday morning at Conowingo Dam at the mouth of the Susquehanna River on the Chesapeake Bay. Since we'll get the best photos in the first few hours of daylight, we'll be meeting at 7:00am.
- Online classroom session: Wed. Nov. 10, 6:00-7:30pm
- Outing: Friday, Nov. 12, 7:00am - 11:00am
It's a two hour drive from Allentown, so plan to leave around 5:00am and be sure to pack a lunch & snacks! We'll be set up right at the entrance to the parking area. All the details will be discussed in our online class on Wednesday night, so be sure not to miss it.
Our Photo Destination:
Conowingo fisherman's park - 2569 Shures Landing Rd, Darlington, MD 21034
Dan's Camera City instructors will be right there with you for hands-on guidance and feedback.
You must be at least 14 years of age to participate in this workshop.
Your expedition includes:
- Classroom session to help you get great pictures
- Instruction from Dan's photo experts on location
Gear to consider:
Long telephoto lens - the longer, the better. 400-500mm is not unreasonable for this outing. 600mm or more is ideal!
A Polarizing Filter can dramatically change the look of your photo with all that water and sky in the scene.
Tripod or monopod - those big lenses can get heavy. The perfect tripod for this outing would be one that goes higher than eye level without raising the center column and has a gimbal style head. We would not recommend a pistol grip, pan, or 3 way head - those will make it more difficult to track the eagles in flight.
Extra batteries kept in your inside coat pocket - cold weather is hard on batteries.
Special considerations:
DRESS WARMLY, IN LAYERS for this photo outing. We'll be standing outside on a river, in late November, around sunrise. Wool socks and insulated boots are a good idea. Hand warmers in your pockets can keep your fingers in good shape to operate your camera. You can always go back to your car to warm up, but you don't want to miss time photographing!
