Artists' Table Brunch | with Duke Riley

Founded in 1992 by avant-garde visionary and theater director Robert Wilson, The Watermill Center is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts and humanities located on Long Island’s East End. With an emphasis on creativity and collaboration, Watermill ​integrates performing arts practice with resources from the humanities, research from the sciences and inspiration from the visual arts. ​The Center is unique within the global landscape of experimental artistic practice and regularly convenes the brightest minds from across disciplines to do, in Wilson’s words, “what no one else is doing.”

Artists' Table at The Watermill Center features an intimate presentation by our Artists-in-Residence, followed by a farm-to-table meal.

Join us on Saturday, September 25 for Artists' Table Brunch with 2021 Inga Maren Otto Fellow, Duke Riley. Riley's work marries populist myths and historical obscurities with contemporary social and environmental dilemmas, connecting past and present, drawing attention to unsolved issues. The artist's presentation will be followed by a farm-to-table meal sourced from East End farmers and producers.Please note that all Artists’ Table attendees will be required to present proof of vaccination prior to entry. For a full list of COVID Safety Guidelines, please see below.Special thanks to our friends at Halsey Dermatology for their support of Artists' Table at The Watermill Center.<h2>About The Artist</h2>Duke Riley’s work addresses the tension between individual and collective behavior, independent spaces within all-encompassing societies, and the conflict with institutional power. He examines transgression zones and their inhabitants through drawing, printmaking, mosaic, sculpture, performative interventions, infiltrations, and video structured as complex multimedia installations. Riley combines populist myths and historical obscurities with contemporary social and environmental dilemmas, connecting past and present, drawing attention to unsolved issues. Throughout his projects, he profiles the space where water meets the land, traditionally marking the periphery of urban society, what lies beyond rigid moral constructs, a sense of danger and possibility. Riley has had solo exhibitions at Magnan Metz Gallery, New York City; the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland; the Queens Museum of Art, Queens, NY; and the Havana Biennial, among many others. He has received numerous awards and commissions, including a Percent for Art commission, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters &amp; Sculptors Grant, and the MTA Arts For Transit commission for the Beach 98th Street Station renovation. Born in Boston, he received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, in Providence, before moving to New York, settling in Brooklyn, and earning his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute. In the spring of 2016, Riley partnered with Creative Time and the Brooklyn Navy Yard to produce the public art sensation, ‘Fly By Night,’ which was completely reimagined in 2018 as a tribute to the role of pigeons in WWI, produced by 1418Now and the London International Festival of Theater in the historic community of Thamesmead.<h2>Additional Information</h2>This is event is rain or shine. Only guests with proof of vaccination will be admitted.</li></ol>INDOOR GUIDELINES<ol><li>Please bring a mask with you, as masks are required to access the main building, including our restrooms. If you do not have a mask, one will be provided to you prior to your entry into the building.</li><li>Restrooms at The Center will have hand washing and hand sanitizing supplies.
