A conversation with Kofi Boone, Tabitha Montgomery, and Paul Bauknight

Our aspirations for civic assets like parks, schools, libraries – and vital spaces within the public realm, like Lake Street here in Minneapolis – are that they will positively impact the lives of the people in our communities.However, these spaces and institutions are conceived, designed, developed, and managed within historic and present-day systemic and institutional racism. This reality severely constrains the potential of these places and spaces to help create a just and equitable future for all of our community members.During this one-hour conversation, you'll hear about the revolutionary work taking place around the country and here in Minneapolis to center BIPOC designers and communities in reshaping our public and civic spaces to be truly welcoming to all.--This event will be live-streamed on Facebook (@mplsparksfoundation) and recorded if you cannot make it to the live ZOOM event.

Kofi Boone, FASLA is a Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at NC State University. Kofi is a Detroit native and a graduate of the University of Michigan (BSNR 1992, MLA 1995). His work is in the overlap between landscape architecture and environmental justice with specializations in democratic design, digital media, and interpreting cultural landscapes. Kofi’s teaching and professional work have earned awards including student and professional ASLA awards. He serves on the Board of Directors of The Corps Network, The Black Land Loss Prevention Project, as well as the Landscape Architecture Foundation where he is President-Elect. Kofi serves on the advisory board of The Black Landscape Architects Network. He has published work broadly in peer reviewed as well as popular media.

Tabitha Montgomery is passionate about serving people. She is currently the Executive Director of the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA) where she and the staff proactively look for creative ways to advance its advocacy, events, and programs in the community. Tabitha has spent more than twenty years tapping into her gifts of management, communication, and visioning to serve a wide array of people, businesses, and organizations.

Paul D. Bauknight Jr. is an architect, urban designer, design activist and community leader. Working in community-based design and development for over 30 years. He is passionately committed to working at the intersection of social, cultural, economic, and spatial systems creating solutions that are equitable steeped in place and benefit the community. As the Project Implementation Director for the Minneapolis Parks Foundation, he leads the foundations physical projects and outreach to communities and public institutions. A senior affiliate at the Minnesota Design Center he also serves on the following boards Friends of the Mississippi River, The Givens Foundation and the Center for Leadership and Neighborhood Engagement where he is the chair.
