Curator led tour of our fall exhibitions, The First Water is the Body
&amp; the solo exhibition of Athena LaTocha

<p>The First Water Is the Body and the solo exhibition of the work of Athena LaTocha opens on October 9,  2021. Featuring the work of 16 electric and unapologetic makers that belong to and operate in relation with Indigenous communities from across the USA and Canada, these artists work to produce seismic shifts in cultural perspectives that point to reciprocity, critical accountability, and awaken solidarity with place, lands, and waters. Guest curator Maria Hupfield is an artist, educator, and member of the Anishinaabek Nation from Wasauksing First Nation, Ontario, Canada. The First Water Is the Body includes photography, video, sculpture, ceramics, basketry, beadwork, textiles, and jewelry, and related programming will incorporate poetry, music, and film. Participating artists are: Carrie Allison, Natalie Ball, Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory, Jewell Cameron, Mique’l Dangeli and Nick Dangeli, RYAN! Feddersen, Anita Fields, Shan Goshorn, Shannon Gustafson, Marianne Nicolson, Courtney Leonard, Wendy Red Star, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and Neal Ambrose-Smith, and Kali Spitzer. </p><p>Athena LaTocha, an artist who creates monumental works exploring the relationship between natural landscapes and human-made environments, will create a site-specific exhibition in the Mitzi and Warren Eisenberg Gallery. VACNJ has commissioned a new work from her responding to the landscape of Lenapehoking, the land originally inhabited by the Lenape people on which the VACNJ is situated. LaTocha, who is inspired by her Native American heritage, her upbringing in Alaska, and Earthworks artists of the 1960s and 1970s, will immerse herself in several NJ landscapes and gather stories, lore, and materials to use in the exhibition. </p>
