Founded in 1978 by dance and expressive arts therapy pioneers Anna Halprin and Daria Halprin, Tamalpa Institute is internationally recognized for its unique approach to movement, dance, and expressive arts therapy and education. We offer classes and programs throughout the year for people who wish to incorporate the embodied creativity of the arts into their personal lives and professional practices.

Through improvisation, dance shifted from traditional stylized movements to more open-ended exploration and expression.What if the actions we perform everyday, such as eating, dressing, or cleaning, become rich material to enliven our creative lives?Task-based movement, imbued with somatic awareness, feeling states, and imagination, can transform our everyday experiences.Participants will experiment with what happens when something familiar becomes more-than-familiar. We’ll heighten our kinesthetic awareness through our sensing bodies. We’ll open our imagination to play, to welcome something new. We’ll expand our perception by improvising with others.What/ who shows up in our dances? Participants will have an opportunity to share their experiences and discoveries.Have a comfortable space to move and drawing/writing materials on hand.Workshops are for ages 18+ only and disability access is not provided.Joy Cosculluela, RSMR/MT (she/her) resides in the ancestral lands of the Ohlone people, otherwise known as SF Bay Area. Joy is a performing artist, somatic educator, and artistic director of Wayﬁnding Performance Group, a multicultural ensemble of artists in SF. She was associate teacher and dancer with Anna Halprin and The Sea Ranch Collective. Joy has collaborated with numerous Bay Area artists and has worked as guest teacher at SF State, University of Washington, Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants, Nature Talks, and BodyMind Centering Association. She holds an MFA Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College, is artistic director of Performance Lab SF and is core faculty at Tamalpa Institute in Kentfield, CA.REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Registration will close 1 hour prior to the start time of the first class.REFUNDS: will only be given if cancellation is received at least 48 hours before the start of the first class. No partial refunds or transfers available. Eventbrite processing fees are non-refundable.
