Nature Journaling at the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center

Nature Journaling at the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center

By Big Waters Land Trust

Overview

Learn to observe and record the natural world through drawing and writing.

Join us at the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center at the Celery Fields for a guided nature journaling event, where participants will learn to observe and record the natural world through drawing and writing. This hands-on program offers a relaxing way to connect with nature while sharpening observation skills. Nature journaling is both fun and meaningful, as it deepens your appreciation for wildlife and helps you notice details that you might otherwise miss. Beginners and experienced journalers are welcome. All materials will be provided; however, you are welcome to bring your own journal and additional materials if you wish.

We will spend the first half of the program at the picnic tables and in the garden at the Nature Center, before moving to a boardwalk at the Celery Fields to conclude the morning.

This program is suitable for all ages, but does require periods of sustained focus and quiet observation. All participants under the age of 16 must attend with a parent or guardian.

Participants should bring a water bottle and wear clothing appropriate for the weather. We recommend sun protection, bug spray, and closed-toe shoes, no flip-flops. You may wish to bring binoculars or a camera as well. Restrooms and water fountains are available on site. You may wish to bring a bag lunch or snack to enjoy at the nature center after the program.

This program is provided in partnership with the Sarasota Audubon Society.

More about the Sarasota Audubon Nature Center

The Nature Center is located in the heart of the Celery Fields – Sarasota County’s number one birding destination! Once an agricultural mecca for celery farmers, today the Celery Fields is the county’s award-winning storm water treatment area and one of the ‘birdiest’ places on the Great Florida Birding Trail. With 400+ acres of restored wetlands, it provides habitat for 246 species of birds and a diversity of wildlife. Stopping by the Nature Center will enhance your enjoyment of the Celery Fields with education, information, and amenities:

  • Talk to our knowledgeable Audubon Docents about the birds and wildlife of the Celery Fields – and around the county
  • Find out about our local habitat and wetlands
  • Learn about sustainable design in our LEED GOLD-certified building
  • Brown bag it and watch birds from our large, covered patio
  • Refill your water bottle at our hydration station
  • Shop at our gift store for hats, water bottles, and more
  • Pick up an Audubon Activity Schedule or sign up for a birding class or a workshop

The Nature Center is open Daily from 9 AM to noon from October 1st to May 31st, and until 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday from mid-January through mid-April
